November Books

Here's what I've been reading in November:

Heartman by M.P. Wright - this is a stunning debut novel which is set in 1960s Bristol.  A young deaf and dumb West Indian woman goes missing and local politician Earl Linney asks down on his luck Barbadian ex-cop Joseph JT Ellington to track her down. JT finds himself in a world of prostitution, kidnapping and conspiracy.

We find out that JT has deep heartache in his past and he spends a lot of time with family members and friends who are part of the close knit immigrant community in Bristol.  I especially liked Cousin Vic and slow witted but loyal Carnell and his bossy but loving wife Loretta.

The plot has lots of twists and turns and I found it really hard to put the book down. It is part of a trilogy with part 2 out in May 2015.  It's one of my favourite books this year.  If you haven't read it yet - you must!

The Perfume Garden by Kate Lord Brown - the story jumps between the Spanish Civil War and the days leading up to and the aftermath of 9/11.  Emma Temple has just lost her mum Liberty, the founder of Liberty Temple Perfumes who leaves her a box of letters and a key to a villa in Valencia in Spain. Emma's ex Joe is now in a relationship with Lila and Emma flees to Spain to start afresh pregnant with Joe's child.

Her grandmother Freya was a nurse in Spain during the Civil War and has painful memories of her time there.  Her brother and her try to stop Emma going but there are ties that bind Emma to Spain which we find out about as the story progresses.  I really enjoyed this book.

Academy Street by Mary Costello - Tess is a shy and sensitive child who grows up in rural Ireland in the 1940s. She follows her sister to 1960s New York where she lives for over four decades. She returns to Ireland in her 60s for her brother's funeral.  She lives quietly on Academy Street where she loves deeply, suffers loss, loneliness, has few friends and struggles sometimes through life. She never feels like she has been a good enough mother to her adored only son Theo. I'll be keeping an eye out for Mary Costello's next book as I loved this one.

The Story of You by Katy Regan - Robyn the main character is a Psychiatric nurse who cares for mental health patients who we find out more about as the story progresses.  She goes back to her home town when her ex-boyfriend Joe's mum dies. She's not seen Joe for 16 years. The story covers family life, mental health, depression, anxiety, miscarriage and birth. Robyn writes letters to Lily and we find out the secret she can't tell Joe. I simply loved it (the story made me happy, sad and made me cry too).  If you love Jojo Moyes you'll love this book.

Wendill Patin's Pork Pie by M P Wright - this short story is set just before Christmas 1966.  JT Ellington (who we met in Heartman) is drowning his sorrows in the pub. He is lonely and finds himself at a loose end at weekends. He's missing what he has lost.  He finds out that Wendill Patin, a known thief has stolen from Gangland Boss Billy Ryder and hidden his stolen goods in his pork pie hat. He tries to be a good Samaritan and decides to help Patin out but JT is sure his path will cross in the future with Billy Ryder...A great short read.

My final book this month is The Last Rose of Summer by Kate Lord Brown - this is again a short story - a prequel to The Perfume Garden.  In this book we learn about Liberty Temple, Emma's mum. She meets up with her ex love John, Emma's dad in Spain and she shows him round a villa she is buying for Emma. We find out Liberty is dying and John suggests she writes letters to Emma for every occasion she may need help from her mum in the future - on love, on friendship etc.  John buys Liberty a black lacquered perfume box to hold the letters in...I loved this story and I felt it didn't matter that I'd read The Perfume Garden first.

Yarok Feed Your Moisture Masque

As you'll know I'm a huge fan of the Yarok hair care brand.  I've previously reviewed their Feed Your Youth Hair & Scalp Serum* and their Feed Your Ends Leave-in Conditioner featured in my Summer Saviours.

This newish launch at a beautiful world is quite probably one of the best deep conditioning treatments I've ever used!

Yarok's Feed Your Moisture (£32 for 4oz)* is perfect for dry, stressed, curly and colour treated hair.  It is packed full of Organic Coco Creme, Aloe Vera Gel, Wild Harvested Seaweed Extract, Organic Oats and Essential Oils of Rose and Sandalwood.  It smells floral and spicy.

It is a little on the pricey side but you only need to use a small amount so I reckon this pot would last a good few months using it once a week.

To use: shampoo your hair and towel dry.  Apply the masque from root to tip and comb through using your fingers or a comb.  Massage into the scalp. Leave on 5-10 minutes before rinsing.

After use my hair is super soft, shiny, smooth and healthy looking and the effects last through the next couple of washes too. I know it will be a product I'll be buying again and again.

Have you used this masque?  What's your favourite Yarok product?

November: Lately I've been Loving

These are the things which have been making me smile this month:

I picked up some delicious cinnamon shortbread and a super yummy homemade chocolate bar studded with seeds, fruit and Calendula petals from Pinnies & Poppy Seeds (well worth a visit if you are in Edinburgh).  I'll be visiting again...and soon!  You can see the shortbread flavours here.

I received this extra special gift* from Bee Good which was sent to bloggers for their support throughout the year. It made me smile...lots! The little bee Christmas decoration is the cutest thing. I'm looking forward to hanging up the pretty stocking, and having toast with my honey, eating the bee embossed chocolate and making sure my lips are smooth and nourished with the very gorgeous Vanilla & Honey Lip Balm.  You can purchase the Christmas Bee Pampered Gift set here which comes with beauty goodies and delicious biscuits! - see my review of it here*.

I've been going to watch the football and rugby more often lately. Makes for a fun afternoon out (especially if we win!)  Here are my handbag essentials.

Another November highlight as been the arrival of my Ginvent Advent Calendar.

I finally got round to using my super pretty Kate Heiss Stationery notebooks. I just love nice notebooks and cards.

I'm a huge fan of Skin & Tonic's Steam Clean which I received in November's YOU Beauty Discovery Box. It quite simply is one of the best cleansing balms I've ever used! I love its minty scent too and the fact you can use it as a cleanser, a moisturiser, for cuticles and I've even used it to tame frizzy flyaways.  Just adore!

Here's the products I've been currently reaching for -

Thea Skincare Skin Brightening System Fruit Enzyme Toner* and Fruit Enzyme Creme Moisturiser* these organic products help to brighten the skin and are a joy to use. Full reviews up shortly.

de Mamiel Salvation Body Oil which came in the fabulous Net-a-Porter Holiday Kit.  This oil is fast becoming one of my favourite body products. It smells simply divine. It contains five potent revitalising oils - Baobab, Argan, Camellia, Rosehip and Coconut and is scented with Ylang Ylang, Rosewood, Sandalwood and Jasmine. It leaves the skin smooth and silky and smelling gorgeous! Full size is on the wishlist!

Dahliana Refreshing Citrus Cleanser I can quite honestly say I didn't love this cleanser when I first tried it.  It wasn't citrussy enough for me and smelt a bit soapy but I persevered and came to love it!  This is my cleanser of choice in my morning shower and one I'd buy again.

I picked up the NEOM Complete Bliss Body Wash in TKMaxx an absolute steal at £7.99 (Neom recently rebranded and this is the old packaging). This is one of my favourite Neom scents with Moroccan Blush Rose, Lime and Black Pepper. Upon browsing the website this scent in body care products seems to have been discontinued. Boo!

Join as a VIP Subscriber for a year for £25. You get the magazine (8 issues a year), invitations to events, a Perfume Discovery Fragrance Edition, special content on the website which is only for subscribers and subsequent Discovery boxes for £10 with free P&P.

As I'm not a subscriber (yet) my The Holiday Collection Discovery Box cost £15 with free P&P.  It is absolutely jam packed with perfume samples and a couple of extra treats.

Inside there are in-depth information cards about each product and a book of blotters - use these before trying the perfume on your skin as the heart and base notes of a perfume are the ones you live with once the top notes subside.

I'll start with a perfume I already love. L'Artisan Mure et Musc EDT 1.5ml - I've been lucky enough to own a bottle of this beautiful scent.  It has top notes of lemon, orange, basil, mint and red berries. A heart of blackberry and jasmine and base notes of patchouli, musks, oak and moss.  I love the fresh blackberry floral notes.  Think a bottle of this is going on the wishlist as I'd forgotten how lovely it is!

Another perfume I adore is Shay & Blue's Atropa Belladonna 2ml - it is an intoxicating scent and I reviewed it here. I'm currently on my second bottle.

The second last scent in the box that I've tried previously is Liz Earle's Botanical Essence No 15 EDP 2ml - a "fresh oriental" with top notes of pink pepper, bergamot and cinnamon leaves, a heart of rose absolute Damascena, cypriol and cedarwood with a base of vanilla bourbon, amberiff, sandalwood and tonka bean. Spicy and warm with floral and earthy notes.

The final perfume I've tried before is Plum by Mary Greenwell EDP 2ml - I didn't love this the first time I tried it but I'll try it again.  It has top notes of peach, bergamot, lemon, plum and blackcurrant with heart notes of gardenia, tuberose, orange blossom, rose and jasmine (I love these notes!) with a base of sandalwood, oak moss, patchouli, amber and white musk.  I'll let you know my thoughts once I've given it another go.

All the rest of the perfumes I haven't tried before. I'll give you an update later as to my thoughts on them when I try them.

Agent Provocateur Fatale EDP 2ml - this has top notes of pink pepper, mango and blackcurrant with a heart of velvet gardenia, orris absolute and patchouli with a base of vanilla, skin musk, chocolate gourmand addiction and labdanum.

Judith Williams I love Milano, Principessa EDP 10ml - this smells beautiful and is a great size!  With top notes of mandarin, green leaf accord and passionfruit, heart notes of jasmine, tuberose and gardenia and base notes of amber, musk, vanilla and solar accord.

L'Occitane Collection de Grasse The Vert & Bigarade EDT 7.5ml - I adore Magnolia & Mure from this range.  This one has top notes of orange and bitter orange, heart notes of green tea and yerba mate with base notes of cedar, thyme and musk.

Versace Crystal Collection - Yellow Diamond, Bright Crystal and Crystal Noir EDT 1ml - two in the trio are florals and one is oriental. They were created to "celebrate the rich and infinite variety of personalities that embody the Versace women".

The extra treats are:

A full size (8ml) nails inc Gel Effect Polish in St James and a 5ml trial size of Sarah Chapman's Skinesis Overnight Facial.

A great box I think. What are your thoughts?

Lea Journo Hydra-Riche Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner

Lea Journo haircare is exclusive to Cult Beauty in the UK.  The range is infused with French Plum Oil (cold pressed from the plum kernel) which infuses the hair with a high concentration of nourishing fatty acids.  Lea is a Parisian who owns Beverley Hill's hippest salon and travels the world to maintain the hair of Hollywood's stars.

Hydra-Riche Hydrating Shampoo (90ml - £10, 300ml - £21) - this shampoo removes product build-up as well as nourishing and strengthening the hair.

Hydra-Riche Conditioner (90ml - £10, 300ml - £21) - this for me is the star of the duo. Super luxe it nourishes and hydrates the hair leaving it silky, glossy and soft.  It is a "rehabilitative treat for stressed tresses".

These are great for taking on holiday as the 90ml size is perfect for hand luggage.  They are free from parabens and sulphates and the products have an exquisite floral scent. Next time I want to try Revive French Plum OilMirroir Glossing Cream and Lumiere Illuminating Moisturiser.

The Affirmation is "I speak my truth with courage and integrity".  Neroli helps to overcome anxiety and listen to our inner wisdom calming and soothing the mind.  Aquamarine is the stone of courage which helps to clarify the mind, unblock thoughts and clear the throat chakra giving strength to powerfully stand and speak our truth.  Love this item!

Elemental Herbology Deep Cleanse Body Wash 50ml (£6.50) - huge fan of the face care range. Haven't tried anything from the body care range before. This Deep Cleanse Body Wash combines bio-dynamic algae with apple, grapefruit, lemon and rosemary.  Smells gorgeous!

Lyonsleaf Calendula Cream 15ml trial size - this is the only Lyonsleaf product I haven't tried.  It is great for soothing eczema or psoriasis and as a healing cream for abrasions and rashes. It can also be used for massage and dry skin areas. A wonder cream!

Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser

I've been a fan of Suki long before I became a blogger.  The range which is created by Suki Kramer is 100% natural and is designed to help those suffering from skin problems and irritations such as eczema, rosacea, dermatitis and acne.

There are two ranges - one is to balance and the other is to brighten and slow signs of ageing.

The Best Selling Vegan Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser is one of my favourite products in the range.  This 30ml size (£10.95) came in Love Lula's Clean Sweep Selection Box.

The cleanser is scented with reviving Lemongrass and natural sugar crystals gently exfoliate the skin. It is great for sloughing away blackheads, unclogging pores, smoothing and rejuvenating the skin.  Suitable for all skin types except those with rosacea.

Apply to wet hands, rub palms together to activate and massage onto face and neck before rinsing. Use once a day or 2-3 times per week.

Have you tried this product? What's your favourite in the range?
